A downwind adventure inspired by Mitu Monteiro, from Sal to Boavista, powered only by our kites.

Imagine standing on the beach of Boavista, looking out over the ocean. In your mind’s eye Sal is looming in the distance. Scenes of local kite-pro Mitu Monteiro ripping the Cape Verdean breaks fresh in your memory. That buzz, a relentless drive for improvisation, adventure and pushing barriers are what sparked Ulrich´s dream into reality. The Kite Downwind from Sal to Boavista was born in 2015 when Ulrich visited the Cape Verdean Islands for the first time. Inspired by the incredible crossing of Mitu Monteiro he wanted to make a solo trip from Sal to Boavista himself. Unfortunately, very soon he had to realize this was way above his budget. In 2016 when he returned to Boavista he had the idea to make it a charity event.

In February 2017, the first Kite Downwind from Sal to Boavista took place. 14 national and international riders raised funds for the local association "un click per un sorriso". This is an organization that runs a "fee-free" Kindergarten on the Island.

At the Kite Downwind in 2017 we had about 20 knots of wind and 3 meters of ocean swell.

Boavista, not your ordinary kitesurf holiday location

The Downwind adventure will take you from the famous "Kitebeach" at the Center of Mitu and Djo along the rough coast of Sal to the magnificent island of Boavista. You will cross 75km+ through the open Atlantic Ocean using only your kite and board. A number of support boats will look out for your safety and carry your luggage. When we get close to Boavista there will be a race to complete this unique experience. Your arrival will be blessed with crowds at the beach cheering you on. Food, drinks and the winners ceremony will forever cement this experience in your memory. Have a look at the location to find out more about the downwind track, and if you can’t wait any longer you are more than welcome to sign up, just click here.

You can join the crossing using your Twintip or Surfboard. The Locals here surely prefer strapless.

Kitesurfing downwind with a purpose

From day one Kite Downwind was all about having an adventure, meeting like-minded people, sharing our passion and doing some good for others. We believe that a small group of participants is the key to achieve a richer experience, connect with nature, the country and the people. We therefore limit the number of participants to 25 riders. This Adventure is not your standard sports event. We are all about ocean protection, living a sustainable lifestyle and giving back. You can read all about the requirements to participate here.

Cape Verde is waiting for you

On the one hand the Kite Downwind is a very unique adventure for skilled kite surfers who are seeking experiences beyond the standard kitesurf holidays. On the other hand, it is a fundraising initiative for the local youth on Boavista. So, you can actively participate as a rider or support our cause from the comfort of your home. " Toes dug in the sand, the smell of salt in the air, water caressing your feet excitedly welcoming you home, imagination fired up, excitement burning in your gut and chest. Steadying your kite, ready to shred those waves … a defiant, cheeky grin settles from ear to ear "
